Trademark Registration Guide and Information

Trademark Scam Alert

Business owners who are registering trademark should be wary of demands for money to register your trademarks. Once a trademark application is filed with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), the application details become public record and easily found online. These records include the trademark proprietor’s name and address, which is mined by several companies for a number of different scams.

The scams often take forms of invoices and look very similar to an official payment demands. They appear to be from a governmental institution and the website referred to also looks professional. These bogus invoices are for getting the privilege of having your marks listed in their company’s register / directory. They have NO relevance or connection to your trademark application or registration in Singapore.

The registry has listed the following companies reported to have sent “deceptive communications” to trademark owners:

- TMP, Trade Mark Publishers, Austria but with a street address in Sydney

- Commercial Centre for Industry and Trade (based in Switzerland)

- Company for Economic Publications Ltd (based in Austria)

- Company for Publications and Information Anstalt (based in Liechtenstein)

- Edition The Marks KFT • European Institute for Economy and Commerce - EIEC (based in Belgium)
